I am trying to let my (3-year old) daughter's hair grow out long, but I need advice on trimming: how often, how much, to make sure the ends are constantly healthy. She has Black hair with more of an S-type curl. It's generally in good condition but the ends do dry out.

As with all hair types you should only be trimming her hair when it needs it. If you want to grow it out you should trim it when it looks like it needs it, signs will be split ends or strands looking a bit ragged. As she's not wearing her hair straight you don't need to worry about getting it even so you can trim it yourself. You can do this by putting it in about 6 ponytails and cutting a small amount off of each. Make sure you buy a good pair of scissors and only use them for her hair.
Don't rely on a salon as they will probably throw a relaxer on it because they can't be bothered to manage it. If her hair is dry you could probably wash it more often. My hair is natural and I wash it almost everyday, there's nothing wrong with this contrary to what alot of black people will tell you. This helps my ends stay moist without relying on 102 products to do it for me. If you put a little bit of oil (any kind, not necessarily hair oil, olive or vegetable will do) on her ends while it's damp this can help too so it shouldn't need trimming so often

if you have a child with hair that is "ethnic" hair and you do not know how to trim it or take care of it go to a Black salon that also does natural hair and have them trim it and I mean do the edges. I, as a child and I never had my hair trimmed unless it was chemically relaxed.
