Tips for straigtening hair with regular iron without burning myself?

Using a regular iron is highly UNRECOMMENDED. Women used this method back in the 50's and 60's. Then they came out with straighteners. Then they realized that the technology used in standard straighteners isn't much different than an iron and can literally "fry" your hair. Results will equal dry hair with a head full of split ends which no treatment will be able to restore. You will just have to grow it out. Hope your hair grows fast..:) Ok, now that I've shed some light on what to expect from your idea, it's only fair that I suggest an alternative.

Get a ceramic straightener. You don't have to spend hundreds for one. You can even use a ceramic plated straightener sold at any drugstore or walmart ($20-30). The key is to use a moisturizing shine treatment right before and after straightening. I recommend BioSilk hair serum.

The curlier and thicker your hair, the thinner the straightener should be so it will allow you better and safer access to the roots, resulting in longer lasting straight hair.

Don't forget to add a dab of the serum everyday for added moisture and shine.

Hope this helps!

Put a towel between the iron and your hair. Get someone else to do the ironing for you.

Don't do that, you will ruin your hair. Buy a hair straightner.

There was actually a segment on this on Rachel Ray this week, so there might be info on her web site. Basically, it was all about doing it in sections, using a roll brush underneath, %26amp; the way you hold your hair dryer. I hope that helps.

Gosh this brought me back to the day.I used to do it all the time when I was in high school like 10 yrs ago.Okay wet your hair and then towel dry it to damp and then comb.Get another towel now put the wet towel on the floor and lay your hair on top of it take the second towel and drape it from your forehead to the the bottom of your head thats resting on the floor. You use that towel as a guide of where the top of the iron should go and it also protects you from burning yourself at the same time....

Hope That Helps,

Don't.

I watched my older sister do this in the 60's, she used to do her bangs every day.

Spread your hair flat on an ironing board and cover it with a press cloth (a thin hand towel or a cloth napkin would work. Grab a section, and press it flat with an iron on a low heat setting.

Just go slow and take your time with the iron until you get used to using it so you don't burn yourself.

Maybe you could put a headband on across your forehead so if you did accidentally hit yourself, you would not get burned.

Be careful, good luck. Hope it comes out great for you!

hah, i do that a lot! flip your hair over (instead of leaning back) and place a towel on top of your hair unless you have it on a very low temp. and make sure you put some styling gel on your hair first to help protect your hair from damage.

Take a long bath towel and fold it so it's thick. Then hold the towel on the inside of your hair so your hair flows over towel and then CAREFULLY run iron over hair since it would be supported with the towel. My cousin does it and it turns out PIN straight; even better than a regular flat iron.

If you can afford it, go with a good ceramic flat iron like a Chi. Apply Biosilk when your hair is damp, to protect it. I also use Redken's straightening serum, so that I don't have to use the iron as much. Chi makes a good protector called 44-Iron too. I have used the less expensive flat irons and they fried my hair. Since I have used the Chi my hair is much healthier.
